Gwyneth Paltrow Explains Rejecting Explicit Scene in Acclaimed ’90s Film
Gwyneth Paltrow has reflected on her decision to reject an explicit scene in the acclaimed 1998 film, “Great Expectations.” During a recent conversation with co-star Ethan Hawke for Vanity Fair, Paltrow recalled the moment she turned down a controversial scene directed by Alfonso Cuarón.
Paltrow’s Refusal of an Explicit Scene
In their discussion, Hawke brought up the director’s original vision for a love scene, which included intimate moments between their characters. Paltrow stated her concern about how her family, particularly her father and grandfather, would react to such a scene.
“I was like, ‘Oh my god, my father’s going to have a heart attack,” she said, recalling how the scene was to be filmed. She remembered Cuarón’s dramatic description of the scene: “The camera is going to go down your belly, and then it’s going to go up your breasts, and then it’s going to go in your face as you reach ecstasy,” Hawke recounted.
Reflections on Career Choices
Paltrow admitted that she was quite self-conscious about these types of scenes at the beginning of her career. “Now, I wouldn’t care,” she mentioned, acknowledging her growth over the years.
Hawke praised Paltrow’s approach to the situation back then, noting she was assertive without being disrespectful. Paltrow responded, “Maybe I was too prudish in the moment. I was definitely worried about it.”
Behind the Scenes of “Great Expectations”
“Great Expectations,” a modern adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel, featured Hawke as Finn and Paltrow as Estella. During their conversation, Paltrow revealed she almost missed out on the role due to concerns over her appearance. She recalled a moment of doubt when someone at the studio suggested she wasn’t “pretty enough” for the character.
