As of early Monday morning, the National Weather Service reported varying snowfall measurements across Minnesota:
- Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport: 5.8 inches
- Chanhassen: 5.6 inches
- Brainerd: 3.5 inches
- Eau Claire, Wisconsin: 8.5 inches
- Rochester: 4 inches
- Burnsville: 7 inches
- Maple Grove: 6.2 inches
- Fargo-Moorhead: 4.5 inches
- Duluth: 2.1 inches
Several areas, including Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, and Osseo, declared snow emergencies. Additionally, numerous schools opted for closures or delayed openings on Monday due to the adverse weather.
Road Conditions and Safety Concerns
Travel advisories are in place as road conditions remain dangerous. Blowing snow and ice significantly impact highways, particularly in central and southern Minnesota. Much of the metro area is experiencing roads that are at least partially covered with snow.
Interstate 35 remains closed between Albert Lea and the Iowa border due to severe whiteout conditions. From midnight Sunday to early Monday morning, the Minnesota State Patrol recorded nearly 400 accidents. Among these incidents, 31 involved injuries.
Government Response
In light of the ongoing storm, Governor Tim Walz has declared a peacetime emergency. He has authorized the National Guard to assist with emergency operations related to the winter storm in southern Minnesota.
