Top Oregon Suburbs with Highest Population Growth This Year
According to recent data from Portland State University (PSU), Portland’s suburban areas are experiencing significant population growth. This trend is expected to continue, driven primarily by a combination of housing availability and net in-migration.
Top Oregon Suburbs with Highest Population Growth This Year
For the year ending June 30, 2025, Washington County led the state with the highest population increase, gaining over 4,000 residents. Below are some key figures from the most populous suburbs:
- Beaverton: Surpassed 100,000 residents for the first time, marking a significant milestone.
- Hillsboro: Added more than 1,000 residents, reaching a total population of 112,035.
- Happy Valley: Experienced steady growth with an estimated population of 28,291, up from 27,727 last year.
- Multnomah County: Grew by approximately 2,200 residents.
- Clackamas County: Increased by around 1,400 residents.
Natural Population Decrease and Migration Trends
Despite the overall modest growth in Oregon’s population, the state faced a “natural population decrease.” In 2025, 42,136 deaths outnumbered 39,302 births. This trend indicates that Oregon is increasingly reliant on in-migration for population expansion.
Approximately 17,000 new residents moved to the state, which helped to offset the natural population decrease. Researchers from PSU utilized data from various state and federal agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Census Bureau, to compile these estimates.
Factors Influencing Suburban Growth
Jake Procino, an economist at the Oregon Employment Department, highlighted housing availability as a key factor. He noted that suburbs often provide larger and more affordable housing options compared to Portland itself, attracting new residents.
Interestingly, while the majority of growth occurred in the suburbs, Portland also experienced a slight increase of 1,221 residents, bringing its total population to approximately 640,623.
Growth in Smaller Towns
In addition to the suburbs, some smaller communities are also thriving. For instance:
- Yamhill: Experienced a 7% population increase.
- Adair Village: Near Corvallis, saw a 6% growth in population.
The recent data underscores the shifting demographics in Oregon, showcasing the burgeoning suburbs as primary drivers of population growth in the state.
