Marriott CEO Discusses Future of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
Marriott International, a global leader in hospitality, is noted for its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). The company employs over 800,000 associates across its hotels and resorts worldwide. Recently, CEO Anthony Capuano highlighted Marriott’s ongoing efforts to champion DEI, especially in light of external challenges.
Marriott’s Workforce and Culture
Marriott consistently ranks among the top workplaces. The company was positioned 8th on Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list in 2025. Remarkably, 90% of Marriott employees express their endorsement for the organization, significantly exceeding the average of 57% across other companies.
Leadership Response to Changes in DEI Policy
Capuano’s leadership has guided Marriott through recent policy shifts affecting DEI initiatives. Following the announcement of President Trump’s executive orders in January 2025, Capuano convened with his executive team in Bethesda, Maryland. They decided to take a week to evaluate the potential impacts of these new policies on hiring and training diversity.
During the Americas Lodging Investment Summit in Los Angeles, Capuano faced numerous inquiries regarding Marriott’s DEI direction. He referenced discussions with his mentor, former chairman Bill Marriott, to formulate his response.
Capuano’s Message on DEI
Capuano emphasized Marriott’s core values, stating, “We welcome all to our hotels and create opportunities for all.” His commitment to DEI remained steadfast, asserting that while language may evolve, the foundational principles of inclusion and opportunity would not change.
Employee Response to Leadership
The CEO’s remarks resonated throughout the company. In just 24 hours, he received 40,000 emails from Marriott associates globally, expressing gratitude for the company’s alignment with their personal values. This overwhelming response reflects the strong connection between Marriott’s workforce and its leadership.
Marriott Among Leaders in DEI
In a crowded landscape, Marriott stands out alongside other notable companies like Delta and Cisco, all committed to upholding DEI principles. As a part of this ongoing conversation, the upcoming Fortune Workplace Innovation Summit will explore the interplay of AI, humanity, and strategy in shaping future workplace dynamics.
The event is scheduled for May 19–20, 2026, in Atlanta, promising engaging discussions on the evolution of work environments.
