Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City is making strides to enhance community involvement within his administration. Following a successful grassroots campaign mobilization comprising tens of thousands of volunteers, Mamdani aims to ensure that this movement continues to thrive.

Mamdani’s Initiative for Civic Engagement

On Friday, Mamdani will establish the Office of Mass Engagement. This new office will be managed by Tascha Van Auken, who orchestrated the campaign’s field operations. The initiative seeks to strengthen ties between City Hall and local communities.

Scope of the Office

  • Oversight of existing city units:
    • The Public Engagement Unit
    • The Mayor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships
    • NYC Service
    • The Civic Engagement Commission

Mamdani expressed his commitment to addressing the disconnect between city government and everyday New Yorkers. He stated, “For too long, city government has only listened to the wealthy and well-connected while working New Yorkers remain further disconnected.” The new office aims to create a direct line of communication for residents wishing to engage with government services.

Goals of the Office of Mass Engagement

The initiative is designed to provide a platform for residents to express their concerns and seek assistance. “We are all too familiar with wanting to participate in City government and not knowing where to go,” Van Auken noted. The office’s mission includes the following objectives:

  • Connect citizens with relevant city services.
  • Support New Yorkers facing challenges such as eviction and unemployment.
  • Empower individuals with the resources necessary to thrive.

Community Empowerment Through Engagement

Mamdani’s new administration seeks to formalize the informal channels of communication that emerged during his campaign. Van Auken, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, has extensive experience in community mobilization, having previously led campaigns for state legislators.

This initiative reflects a paradigm shift in how government interacts with its constituents, making it easier for all New Yorkers to make their voices heard. By harnessing the momentum established during the campaign, Mamdani and Van Auken are poised to reshape civic engagement in the city.
