Neil Diamond’s Unexpected Response to Tribute Band Film “Song Sung Blue”
Neil Diamond’s music plays a pivotal role in the new film “Song Sung Blue,” directed by Craig Brewer. The film features Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson and tells the true story of Mike and Claire Sardina. These two individuals from Wisconsin meet during later years of their lives, fall in love, and form a successful Neil Diamond tribute band named Lightning & Thunder.
Tribute Band and Musical Legacy
The Sardinas’ journey includes a significant moment when Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder requests them to open for the band during a concert in Madison. In reality, the couple performed with Vedder during the band’s encore at Milwaukee’s Summerfest in 1995.
In a twist of events, filmmaker Greg Kohs received a cease-and-desist letter from Diamond’s record label before the premiere of his 2008 documentary, also titled “Song Sung Blue.” The letter prohibited the use of Diamond’s music, which was integral to the film. Fortunately, Vedder intervened by contacting Diamond directly, leading to a favorable outcome.
Neil Diamond’s Support
According to Brewer, Diamond watched the documentary and felt moved by it. He subsequently instructed his publishing company to allow Kohs to include the music in the film. Brewer reflects on Diamond’s reaction during the private screening of the latest film, conveying that he was pleasantly surprised by Diamond’s enthusiastic response.
- Diamond showed signs of enjoyment by tapping his foot and applauding after music numbers.
- He reportedly cried during the screening and expressed eagerness to see it again.
Musical Impact
Brewer hopes Diamond acknowledges the profound impact of his songwriting. He emphasizes that Diamond is not only a performer but also a dedicated writer who profoundly resonated with his music. “Song Sung Blue” is currently in theaters, bringing Diamond’s legacy to new audiences.
