Amber Alerts Issued: Snow Disrupts Travel Again
Amber Alerts have been issued once again as snow disrupts travel across northern Scotland. The Met Office announced that significant snow accumulations are expected, starting Sunday evening.
Weather Conditions and Warnings
The amber alerts will take effect from 18:00 and last until 10:00 on Monday. Forecasts predict that areas in the northeast, Highlands, and Northern Isles could receive 5-10 cm (2-4 inches) of snow. Some regions may experience even more significant snowfall, with estimates reaching 20-30 cm (8-12 inches).
Road Conditions
- Drifting and freezing conditions have made roads treacherous in parts of Scotland.
- The A9 and A99 roads between Helmsdale and Wick remain closed.
- Highland Council has advised essential travel only in challenging areas such as Easter Ross, Sutherland, and Caithness.
Early Sunday, 32 gritters were deployed in Aberdeenshire, but many roads were reported as “impassable.” Heavy snow has caused additional complications for rail services. Network Rail has sent snowploughs to clear tracks from areas such as Kintore to Wick, where drifts have reached depths of 1.2 meters (4 feet).
Impact on Travel and Schools
Loganair has cancelled several flights on Sunday, although Aberdeen Airport remains operational. Passengers are advised to verify flight statuses with their airlines before heading to the airport.
In Shetland, all schools are closed on Monday due to the amber weather warnings. Meanwhile, Aberdeen City Council plans to delay school reopenings until 11:00 AM due to ongoing weather uncertainties. Breakfast clubs will also not operate, with further updates communicated by school administrators on Monday morning.
