The Massif de Charlevoix has expressed concern regarding a recent unlimited strike initiated by its employees. The employer claims that two proposals made to the union were not presented to the members before the strike commenced.

Details of Strike at Massif de Charlevoix

Following the expiration of the collective agreement on December 31, the strike was announced just a few days later. Charles-Antoine Choquette, the Vice President and General Director of Groupe Le Massif, remarked that the timing felt hasty. He stated, “We are in a normal negotiation period, and the decision to use an unlimited strike at the start of the process appears particularly premature.”

Union’s Allegations of Withholding Offers

  • The employer claimed to have submitted two offers that remain unshared with employees.
  • These offers were said to meet employee needs while staying consistent with market realities.
  • Salary negotiations are noted as one of the main sticking points between the union and the employer.

On December 30, Groupe Le Massif announced these offers were aimed at addressing the monetary aspect of negotiations. They reported receiving only one counter-offer from the union on December 28, which included salary increase requests that exceeded market comparisons.

Previous Wage Adjustments

The employer highlighted proactive steps taken last year, including increasing base hourly wages by $1, which resulted in an average salary increase of 11.74% for employees.

Union Response and Employee Vote

The Syndicat des travailleuses et travailleurs du Massif, part of the CSN, indicated a preference to return to the negotiation table without further comment. The union represents approximately 300 employees at the ski resort.

  • 95% of 111 voting members supported the unlimited strike mandate.
  • Beyond salary issues, the union also advocates for better terms on subcontracting, sick leave, safety, and vacation policies.

Impact of the Strike on Operations

The Massif de Charlevoix confirmed that the ski resort would remain closed during the strike. This closure affects various operations, including chairlifts, ski trails, toboggan activities, dining services, and retail.

The resort will not resume operations until the strike concludes, aiming for a resolution in the ongoing negotiations.
