Surveillance footage has revealed a distressing incident at Woodlawn Celestial Gardens in Compton, California. On New Year’s Day, three individuals were seen stealing headstones from this historic cemetery, known as a final resting place for 18 Civil War veterans.

Woodlawn Celestial Gardens is a Los Angeles County landmark. Unfortunately, it has been the target of multiple thefts and vandalism over the years. Celestina Bishop, the caretaker of the cemetery, has witnessed these disturbing events firsthand.

“I take care of them like family,” Bishop stated, expressing her emotional distress over the ongoing vandalism. Reports indicate that since 2023, around 1,600 grave markers and plaques have either been damaged or stolen, primarily for their bronze or copper materials, which are valuable for recycling.

Concerns About Safety and Response

Despite the installation of surveillance cameras, Bishop notes that law enforcement response has been inadequate. She expressed frustration, stating, “Even with active descriptions provided, the police are very delayed in their responses.”
