The Significance of Lunar New Year

Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, is celebrated according to the ancient Chinese lunisolar calendar. This calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and the Earth’s orbit around the sun. In 2026, the new year begins on February 17, marking the transition from the Year of the Wood Snake to the Year of the Horse.

Year of the Horse

The Year of the Horse symbolizes traits such as bravery, strength, talent, and independence. Individuals born in this year are believed to embody these characteristics.

Cultural Traditions

The Lunar New Year celebrations are characterized by various traditional activities. These typically include:

  • Feasts and fireworks on New Year’s Eve
  • Parades and performances following the New Year
  • Ceremonies and gifting traditions

The festivities culminate with a lantern festival during the full moon, marking the end of a two-week celebration.

Residents and visitors in the Grand Rapids area are encouraged to join in the celebrations on February 14, 2026. This is an opportunity to explore and appreciate the vibrant Asian cultures represented in the community.
