Transport for Wales (TfW) is set to enhance the commuting experience at Wrexham General with the introduction of three new ‘Pay as You Go’ (PAYG) ticket machines. This initiative marks a significant step towards modernizing rail services in the region.

Details of the ‘Pay as You Go’ Ticket Machines

The new PAYG machines are designed to simplify the ticketing process for travelers. Commuters will be able to use their debit or credit cards to seamlessly ‘tap on’ at the start and ‘tap off’ at the conclusion of their journeys between TfW’s network of Wales and Borders stations.

Application and Installation Plans

TfW has submitted an application to Wrexham Council outlining the plans for these machines. As part of the project, existing ticket gates and validators at the station will be upgraded. The company emphasizes that the new system aims to streamline station services for greater convenience.

  • New mounted ticket validators will be located:
    • Near the main entrance on platform one.
    • Adjacent to the night gate.
    • On platform four, close to the ramped entrance.

TfW reassures that these changes will not affect the station’s historic status. They stated, “The majority of the beneficial impact of the works will be customer-focused.” The PAYG system is becoming increasingly popular among commuters, as it eliminates the need to purchase tickets in advance.

Infrastructure Changes

Installation of the new ticket machines will involve some infrastructure updates. This includes:

  • Implementing new cable management systems in station canopies.
  • Installing concrete foundations and uPVC ducts for cable supply to the validators.

TfW is committed to ensuring that the enhancements minimize impact on the station’s surroundings. The application is currently awaiting approval from Wrexham Council.

As TfW progresses with the rollout of the PAYG system, it underscores the importance of having adequate equipment at station facilities. This initiative aims to increase travel efficiency across the rail network.
