Exciting news has emerged regarding the upcoming concert production of “Once on This Island” in London. This beloved musical, crafted by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, tells the story of Ti Moune, a young woman who saves and falls for Daniel, leading her to engage with the island’s gods.

New Cast for “Once on This Island”

Among the ensemble, notable names have been announced:

  • Alex Newell will reprise the role of Asaka, after their acclaimed performance in the 2018 Broadway revival.
  • Dujonna Gift will take on the lead role of Ti Moune.
  • Melanie La Barrie, a WhatsOnStage Award winner, will portray Papa Ge.
  • Cedric Neal, a WhatsOnStage Award nominee, takes on the role of Agwe.
  • Marisha Wallace steps into the role of Erzulie, expressing her long-held dream to join this production.
  • Jamael Westman, also a WhatsOnStage Award winner, will play Daniel Beauxhomme.
  • Supporting roles include Casey Al-Shaqsy as Andrea Deveraux, Waylon Jacobs as Armand Beauxhomme, Ako Mitchell as Tonton Julian, and Wendy Mae Brown as Mama Euralie.

The ensemble cast will feature Elliot Broadfoot, Jerome Lincoln, Lindo Shinda, and Tamara Tare.

Production Details

This concert production is based on the 1985 novel “My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl” by Rosa Guy, which draws inspiration from Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.” First premiering on Broadway in 1990, “Once on This Island” made its West End debut in 1994, receiving the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

The concert will showcase iconic numbers, such as “Waiting for Life,” “Mama Will Provide,” and “The Human Heart.” Annabel Mutale-Reed is set to direct, with Jordan Li-Smith serving as musical director and conductor. The performance will also feature the London Musical Theatre Orchestra.
