Pennsylvania Families React to Heartless Grave Robbery Targeting Their Loved Ones
Authorities in Pennsylvania are looking into a disturbing series of grave robberies that have occurred at Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon. The situation escalated when skeletal remains were discovered in a man’s basement in Ephrata. This alarming find has prompted an investigation into 26 mausoleums at the historic cemetery.
Pennsylvania Families React to Grave Robbery
Among the targeted mausoleums is one that dates back to 1912, owned by Jonathan Prichard. Jonathan Prichard IV expressed his shock upon learning that his great-great-grandfather’s remains may have been stolen. He reflected, “I’m not real happy about it. That’s twisted.”
Historical Significance
Prichard noted the limited knowledge he has of his ancestor, who was born in 1827. He mentioned that his ancestor had even played a significant role in the construction of a church in Philadelphia. He lamented, “We could have gone to college on his dime if we became ministers.” His son, Jonathan Prichard VI, described the incident as “icky,” emphasizing the sadness that comes from knowing someone would disrespect the dead.
Details on the Investigation
In total, five of nine damaged crypts are missing remains, which may be linked to more than 100 sets of skeletal remains found at the property of Jonathan Gerlach. Authorities believe Gerlach was involved in the illegal sale of human remains. Evidence suggests he was marketing skulls and bones on social media.
Link to Additional Crimes
Gerlach was arrested on January 6 while at Mt. Moriah Cemetery during a police surveillance operation related to the break-ins. The investigation has also connected him to a mausoleum theft in Luzerne County, which is currently under review.
Notable individuals, including Shakespearean actor John McCullough, are interred at the cemetery. Damage has been reported around his family’s burial vault, raising concerns about the preservation of historical graves. Families are urged to come forward if they have loved ones buried in any of the affected mausoleums.
