MacKenzie Scott Donates $45M to Trevor Project as LGBTQ Youth Face Crisis
Billionaire and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has made a historic donation of $45 million to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit dedicated to suicide prevention and advocacy for LGBTQ youth. This contribution stands as the largest single donation in the organization’s 27-year history, according to CEO Jaymes Black.
Addressing a Mental Health Crisis
The Trevor Project’s leadership has emphasized the urgent need for support as research indicates a deteriorating mental health crisis among LGBTQ youth in the United States. Black described Scott’s donation as “transformational,” helping the organization expand its sustainable capacity to assist young people facing such crises.
He stated, “Our organization will continue to face one of the largest public health crises of our time: LGBTQ+ youth suicide.” Black stressed the necessity of ongoing support to fulfill their mission and connect with affected individuals.
Current Mental Health Statistics
- A study released by The Trevor Project in October found that mental health among LGBTQ youth has worsened.
- Over 18 months, more than 1,600 LGBTQ young people were studied in the U.S.
- Participants reported increased rates of anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts.
- LGBTQ youth are at least four times more likely to attempt suicide than their peers.
Black noted the profound impact of Scott’s donation, saying it took time to fully grasp its significance. He expressed excitement about investing these funds with care, aiming to enhance crisis support services and foster an environment where every LGBTQ+ young person feels loved and supported.
Recent Challenges and Funding Needs
The donation comes in the wake of significant challenges for The Trevor Project. Last summer, the Trump administration eliminated part of the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline that specifically served LGBTQ youth. This change is expected to result in a loss of approximately $25 million in federal funding for The Trevor Project.
Since 2019, MacKenzie Scott has made substantial philanthropic contributions, totaling around $26 billion to various nonprofits through her organization, Yield Giving. Notably, she previously donated to The Trevor Project in 2020. This continuous support is crucial in helping to alleviate the ongoing crisis facing LGBTQ youth in America.
