Quebec Liberal Party Begins Official Leadership Race
The leadership race for the Quebec Liberal Party (PLQ) has officially commenced, following Pablo Rodriguez’s resignation in December. Former Desjardins president Guy Cormier has decided not to participate in the leadership contest. He also clarified that he will not run for office in Quebec or Ottawa. This decision leaves the field open for other candidates.
Key Developments in the Leadership Race
Cormier was considered a strong candidate due to his extensive experience and leadership role within Desjardins, where he served until March. Despite discussions during the holiday season about his potential candidacy, he opted to focus on his family instead.
Candidates and Contenders
As of now, the leadership race primarily highlights two potential contenders:
- Charles Milliard: The former president of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Quebec is gaining substantial support. At present, ten PLQ deputies have endorsed him.
- Mario Roy: The Beauce farmer has declared his intention to run. However, he faces a financial hurdle from his previous campaign, with an outstanding debt of approximately $18,000 that needs to be cleared before he can officially enter the race.
Additionally, former VIA Rail Canada executive Yves Desjardins-Siciliano has announced that he will not be a candidate, narrowing the selection further.
Requirements for Candidacy
Individuals wishing to enter the leadership contest must meet specific requirements:
- Pay a non-refundable fee of $30,000 ($15,000 at the moment of candidacy declaration).
- Gather signatures from 750 party members in good standing.
- Obtain support from at least 70 electoral districts across 12 regions.
Mario Roy must resolve his financial obligations before being allowed to proceed with his candidacy. The deadline for submitting candidacy applications is February 13.
This evolving situation suggests that Charles Milliard may emerge as a frontrunner, particularly as he garners support within the party. The upcoming weeks will be crucial for candidates as they seek to solidify their place in this vital political race for the Quebec Liberal Party.
