Police Launch Manhunt After Officer-Involved Shooting Near Dotsero
A manhunt is currently taking place after an officer-involved shooting occurred on Interstate 70 near Dotsero. The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office released a statement detailing events that transpired early in the morning on January 13.
Details of the Incident
At approximately 4 a.m., Vail Public Safety Communications issued a lookout alert for a homicide suspect believed to be traveling near Gypsum. The suspect, reportedly armed, may have been traveling with hostages.
Pursuit of the Suspect
- A deputy from the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office identified a vehicle matching the suspect’s description.
- The vehicle was seen driving westbound on I-70 at a high speed, prompting a pursuit.
- After exiting at mile marker 119, the vehicle re-entered the interstate heading eastbound.
- A spike strip was deployed near mile marker 130 in an effort to halt the vehicle.
Exchange of Gunfire
During the incident, two individuals exited the vehicle and pointed firearms at law enforcement. This resulted in shots being exchanged between the suspects and the officers. One individual was injured and received medical assistance at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital.
Ongoing Manhunt and Public Safety Measures
One suspect managed to flee the scene and is considered armed and dangerous. A multi-agency response is underway to locate the individual. In light of the situation, authorities have issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby areas.
Traffic Disruptions
- I-70 is currently closed at mile marker 140 in Gypsum.
- Traffic is also halted eastbound at mile marker 119 near the Glenwood Canyon rest area.

Authorities urge the public to stay clear of the area and refrain from picking up hitchhikers. If anyone encounters the fleeing suspect, they are advised to not approach and to call 911 immediately.
