Data Breach: Desjardins to Compensate Thousands of Affected Clients
In a significant development, thousands of Quebec residents who are members or clients of Desjardins are receiving compensation related to a data breach from 2019. These payments began rolling out on October 15, 2025. A total of $2 million has been earmarked for distribution among eligible claimants, with each receiving up to $1,000.
Details of the Compensation
This compensation is designed for individuals who submitted identity theft claims between October 21, 2024, and October 20, 2025. The claims must have been approved by Ricepoint, the independent administrator overseeing this matter.
Payment Methods and Fraud Precautions
Desjardins has advised clients to be cautious about potential fraud. Payments will be made through Interac e-Transfer, which will be sent via email. Importantly, Desjardins will not send any funds or notifications through text or SMS.
- For those preferring cheque payments, Ricepoint confirmed that cheques will be mailed by January 18, 2026.
- An additional payment is planned for those who received identity theft payments between January 16 and January 18, 2024.
Continued Protection Measures
In an effort to provide ongoing security, Desjardins emphasizes the importance of its “Desjardins Protection” program. This initiative aims to shield members from unauthorized transactions in their accounts and offers personalized support in cases of identity theft.
Support will be available from specialized attorneys and identity restoration advisors. Additionally, users of AccèsD have access to their credit reports from Equifax and TransUnion at no charge and can activate email alerts for any unusual activity in their TransUnion file.
Assurance of Comprehensive Coverage
According to Desjardins, their “Desjardins Protection” program is robust and remains one of the best free protections available through a financial institution. This initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to safeguarding its customers’ financial well-being.
