Clipper Race: Life-Changing Adventure Switches Boats

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is gearing up for a significant transformation as a new fleet of boats is on the horizon. Organizers at Clipper Ventures, a UK-based company managing this prestigious event, have announced a multimillion-pound investment to construct twelve state-of-the-art 72-foot ocean racing yachts.

Clipper Race: A Life-Changing Adventure

Founded by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, the Clipper Race provides individuals from all walks of life the opportunity to become skilled ocean sailors. Since its inaugural event in 1996, over 7,000 crew members have participated in 14 editions of this exhilarating race, which is now regarded as the most challenging oceanic adventure globally. The race has received accolades, including the “Event of the Year” award at the 2025 British Yachting Awards for its role in engaging new participants in sailing.

Investment in a New Fleet

  • New fleet name: Clipper RX
  • Boat specifications: 72-foot ocean racing yacht
  • Planned completion: By the end of 2023
  • Operational debut: 15th edition in late summer 2027

Sir Robin Knox-Johnston stated that the new design benefits from lessons learned by thousands of crew members and the operational team’s insights. The innovative design was developed in collaboration with top British naval architects, ensuring that the new yachts are both safe and thrilling for crews embarking on this remarkable journey.

Design and Construction Features

The Clipper RX yachts will incorporate advanced safety features, making them well-equipped for the world’s most demanding oceans. The hull design comes from renowned British naval architect Nigel Irens, known for creating a distinct bow shape. The yacht’s design aims to provide both performance and durability suitable for a circumnavigation of approximately 45,000 nautical miles, taking nearly 11 months to complete.

Global Collaborations

Clipper Ventures has established a robust partnership with Qingdao, China, where the new fleet is being constructed. This collaboration ensures that the yachts are built to the highest quality standards while remaining competitively priced. Essential components will be sourced from leading manufacturers in the UK and around the world.

Current Race Status

The ongoing 14th edition of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is currently paused at Airlie Beach, Whitsundays, Queensland, Australia. The next leg, known as The Asia-Pacific Challenge, will take the race to Qingdao, where both the new Clipper RX yachts and the existing Clipper 70 yachts are being built.

This investment in the Clipper RX marks a crucial step for the future of the Clipper Race, signifying ongoing commitment to innovation and adventure in the world of ocean sailing.
