Texans Transform Deshaun Watson Trade into Dominant Defense Strategy
Four years ago, the Cleveland Browns made a monumental error in NFL history by trading for quarterback Deshaun Watson. They tore up his pre-existing contract and signed him to a fully guaranteed five-year deal worth $230 million. This transaction proved disastrous for the Browns, while presenting an opportunity for the Houston Texans to reset their franchise.
Watson’s Complicated Legacy
Prior to the trade, Watson had not played during the 2021 season due to unresolved issues with the Texans. His dissatisfaction stemmed from the team’s lack of consideration for his opinions regarding coaching and general manager hires. At that point, over 20 civil lawsuits alleging misconduct in massage therapy sessions were pending against him, and a suspension seemed imminent.
Trade Dynamics
Despite the controversies surrounding Watson, Texans general manager Nick Caserio successfully identified four teams interested in trading for him: the Browns, Panthers, Falcons, and Saints. The Browns were quick to make a lucrative financial offer, which Watson accepted. In exchange for Watson, the Texans received:
- Three first-round picks
- Two third-round picks
- One fourth-round pick
These draft picks proved to be pivotal for the Texans, who acquired at least ten new players through various trades. Among them, three standout talents significantly bolstered the Texans’ defense:
- Defensive End Will Anderson Jr.
- Cornerback Kamari Lassiter
- Safety Calen Bullock
Building a Strong Defense
If the Texans had only secured Anderson from the Watson trade, it would still be considered a major success. This trade, however, was not the sole factor in revitalizing the Texans’ fortunes. After various coaching changes, including the quick tenures of David Culley and Lovie Smith, the Texans finally found stability under head coach DeMeco Ryans.
Caserio’s strategic maneuvering to move on from Watson laid the groundwork for a rebuilding process that has the Texans eyeing a chance to compete for the AFC Championship. In contrast, the Browns are now grappling with the consequences of their fateful trade decision and are in search of a new coach to replace the one who was let go due to the fallout from the Watson saga.
