In August 1957, Sebastian the Ibis was created by Norman A. Whitten, then Director of the Student Union. He entered Sebastian in a homecoming competition. The following year, student John Stormont donned a homemade Ibis costume to entertain fans during Miami Hurricanes football games. The costume featured unique materials, including ammolite insulation, terry cloth, ROTC spats, and burlap. Today, Sebastian plays a vital role in team spirit.
