PKK Supports SDF in Syria, Blames Turkey

Recent developments in Syria have seen the PKK express support for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), amid ongoing tensions. High-ranking PKK official Murat Karayılan emphasized the commitment to Rojava, stating, “We will not leave Rojava alone, no matter the cost.” He criticized the Syrian government’s redrawing plans, asserting that they aim to prevent the Kurdish people from achieving their rights and status.

Accusations Against Turkey

Karayılan pointed fingers at Turkey, accusing it of playing an “active role” in conflicts between the SDF and the Syrian army. He stated that these attacks are part of a larger conspiracy involving local and international forces. He articulated, “Turkey’s military involvement is evident, with their aircraft actively engaging in this conflict.” He condemned the Turkish government’s behavior, stating that no one is fooled by their pretense of wanting peace while targeting Kurdish achievements.

SDF’s Call to Action

  • The SDF recently issued a call for resistance against the Syrian army.
  • They highlighted “direct and brutal attacks” on their territories since January 6.
  • Their message urged Kurds living worldwide to unite in resistance.

In their statement, the SDF reminded the world of their role in defeating ISIS and protecting against significant threats. They urged the international community to recognize their sacrifices and support them against ongoing assaults.

Failed Ceasefire Talks

In a significant meeting, SDF Commander Mazlum Abdi met with interim President Ahmed Şara. Reports indicate that discussions on a ceasefire and integration ended negatively. Foza Yusuf, a senior PYD official, revealed that the Syrian government demands absolute surrender, which the SDF categorically rejects. Yusuf stated, “They want everything surrendered today, including our institutions and natural resources.”

Escalating Violence and ISIS Prison Break

Amid these tensions, conflicts erupted near two prisons holding ISIS members in northeastern Syria. Approximately 120 ISIS detainees successfully escaped during the chaos, leading to a lockdown in the area as security forces began search operations. While the SDF initially reported about 1,500 escapees, they later confirmed the recapture of 81 individuals. The conflict has raised serious concerns about security in the region.

Political Discussions with the U.S.

Ahmed Şara recently conferred with U.S. President Donald Trump. They emphasized the necessity of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and protecting the rights of the Kurdish population. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continued collaboration against ISIS.

The current landscape in Syria remains tense, with growing complexities involving the PKK, the SDF, and international actors, underscoring the urgent need for diplomatic resolutions to ensure stability in the region.
