Mets Enhance Defense with Luis Robert Jr. Trade from White Sox
The New York Mets have made a significant move to bolster their defense by acquiring center fielder Luis Robert Jr. from the Chicago White Sox. The trade was confirmed on Wednesday, with the Mets sending infielder Luisangel Acuña and right-handed pitcher Truman Pauley to Chicago.
Mets Secure Key Player
This transaction marks the fifth center fielder acquisition by Mets executive David Stearns in his two-plus years at the helm. Robert, 28, is regarded as one of the league’s top defensive center fielders. The Mets will also absorb Robert’s contract, which totals $20 million for the 2026 season, alongside a club option for another $20 million in 2027, along with a $2 million buyout.
Robert’s Performance Record
Robert has earned a reputation for his production at the plate, highlighted by his 38 home runs in 145 games during the 2023 season. However, this performance was an outlier; in the previous two years combined, his batting average dipped to .223, accompanied by a .288 on-base percentage and a .372 slugging percentage, totaling 28 home runs over 210 games. His OPS+ of 85 during this span indicates he has struggled offensively, landing just above Tyrone Taylor’s 84 OPS+ for New York.
Context of the Trade
Robert’s status as a trade asset has heightened in light of the White Sox’s struggles in the American League Central. New York was notably interested in him during last year’s trade deadline but opted for Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles instead. That decision ultimately proved ineffective, as the Mets faltered in the season’s final stretch.
Outfielder Options for the Mets
Prior to acquiring Robert, the Mets were in dire need of outfield talent, possessing merely three outfielders on their 40-man roster. This included Taylor and Double-A prospect Nick Morabito. The Mets are keen to provide an opportunity for prospect Carson Benge in spring training; however, they lack considerable competition for the position.

- Luis Robert Jr. (Center Field)
- Juan Soto (Right Field)
- Tyrone Taylor
- Carson Benge
- Brett Baty (Potential)
Analysis of Departing Players
Luisangel Acuña, acquired from the Texas Rangers in the Max Scherzer trade during July 2023, showed promise but was unable to solidify a spot in the majors. His chances were further hindered by the presence of established players such as Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette. Meanwhile, Truman Pauley, selected in the 12th round of the previous year’s MLB Draft, saw limited action in professional baseball, pitching 4.1 hitless innings for Low-A St. Lucie.
This strategic trade reflects the Mets’ urgent desire to enhance their outfield for the upcoming season, positioning them for a stronger performance in 2026.
