Winter Storm to Blanket Philadelphia Region with Snow and Ice: Live Updates
As a winter storm approaches the Philadelphia region this weekend, residents are scrambling for ice-melting supplies. Local hardware stores are reporting depleted inventories amid a surge in demand for these products.
Supply Shortages for Ice-Melt Products
Shoppers searching for rock salt and other ice-melting materials are facing challenges as many stores struggle to keep items in stock. Russell Goudy, the owner of Killian Hardware in Chestnut Hill, noted that his store recently received a large delivery but expects to sell out in just a day or two. He advised customers to explore alternative options, such as pet-friendly ice melts, though their availability is also diminishing.
Heightened Demand Across the Region
- Mark Jaconski, owner of Stanley’s Hardware in Roxborough, reported that inventory turnover has been astonishingly fast.
- He stated, “As quickly as we get pallets unloaded on the sidewalk, it leaves. In 15 minutes, a pallet is gone.”
- Jaconski also mentioned difficulties keeping shovels in stock, as he has already replaced about 500 units, only to see his racks empty in a matter of days.
This wave of demand has caught many customers off guard. Sandy Hartwig from Roxborough expressed her surprise at the limited supplies, stating, “I thought they definitely had salt.” Similarly, Ralph Pinkus of Mt. Airy is concerned that his remaining ice-melt supply will not last through the upcoming storm.
Store Responses to Increased Demand
To manage the high demand, Stanley’s Hardware has instituted a two-bag limit per customer on ice-melting products. The store is hoping for additional inventory in the near future as winter weather preparations intensify.
As the winter storm nears, residents are advised to act quickly if they need these essential supplies. The race against the clock continues as snow and ice are predicted to blanket the Philadelphia region.
