P.E.I. Boy, 10, Joins Pittsburgh Penguins for a Day via Make-A-Wish
Ten-year-old Myer Gallant from O’Leary, Prince Edward Island, recently fulfilled a dream through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He opted to meet his hockey idols, Sidney Crosby and Ryan Graves, and experience a Pittsburgh Penguins game. Myer, who has spinal muscular atrophy, a genetic condition affecting his muscles, has been a dedicated Penguins fan for three years.
Memorable Experience in Pittsburgh
Myer, accompanied by his mother, Jaclyn Ellis, and cousin, Rowan Rennie, traveled to Pittsburgh to meet the NHL stars. The family was overwhelmed by the generosity and hospitality shown by the Penguins organization. “Make-A-Wish does an incredible job, but Myer’s experience was completely over the top because of the Penguins,” Ellis remarked.
A Penguin for a Day
Upon arriving in Pittsburgh, the group participated in a Penguins practice and attended a game. Inside the team dressing room, Myer was thrilled to find a full locker prepared for him. It included a personalized jersey featuring his name and the number 87, famously worn by Crosby.
- Myer signed a symbolic contract to be a Penguins player for a day.
- He engaged with players and had the opportunity to read the starting lineup.
Myer expressed, “It was really cool, but stressful too at the same time,” highlighting the blend of excitement and nerves he felt during the experience.
A Maritime Gift
To show gratitude, Myer and his family brought gifts from the Maritimes for Crosby and Graves. Recognizing their Nova Scotia roots, the family thought local treats would be a fitting thank-you. Myer recounts, “When we told Graves about the gifts, he immediately asked if there were Cow’s chips!”
Both players appreciated the connection to their home province. Graves, who joined the Penguins after starting his career with the Colorado Avalanche, even invited the family back to the dressing room, further enhancing their experience.
Friendship and Joy
The bonding experience was not just with the players but also among Myer, Rowan, and their families. Myer’s brother opted out of the trip, allowing Rowan to join him. Their close relationship made the day even more special, as they have been best friends since birth.
Both boys were surprised when Crosby gifted them each a Team Canada jersey, describing the moment as unbelievable. “I dropped to my knees. Like, what is happening?” Rowan exclaimed in shock and excitement.
For Jaclyn, witnessing the joy on her son’s face and the care shown by the players created unforgettable memories. “It was an exceptional experience,” she stated, reflecting on the day’s events.
