Previously, the Rays had a stadium agreement set for 2024 in St. Petersburg, located in Pinellas County. However, this plan fell through after hurricane damage delayed approval of necessary bonds. The team required additional funds to address cost overruns due to the delay. Consequently, relations between the Rays and local officials soured, prompting a shift towards collaboration with Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa.

Ownership Changes and Leadership

Stu Sternberg’s decision to sell his majority stake in the team last year was influenced by difficulties in securing a stadium deal. Now, Patrick Zalupski leads the franchise as they work to establish a new deal within Tampa. The team seems to be facing uncertainty, as city and county officials have given mixed messages regarding potential public financing.

Commissioner Ken Hagan has expressed support for a deal in Tampa.
Hagan indicated that if progress stalls at the Dale Mabry site, the Rays might explore opportunities in Orlando.

Interest in a Major League Baseball team in Orlando continues to rise. However, both the MLB commissioner Rob Manfred and Rays officials have reaffirmed their commitment to the Tampa area for the time being.
