Hafley Unveils Crucial Updates on Coaching Staff and QB Strategy

Jeff Hafley, the newly appointed head coach of the Miami Dolphins, has provided insights into his plans for the coaching staff and quarterback strategy during a recent media appearance.

Hafley’s Updates on Coaching Staff

Hafley revealed his intentions regarding the Dolphins’ coaching staff while addressing listeners on the Joe Rose Show. He confirmed that he will take on the responsibility of calling defensive plays but is also focused on hiring three key coordinators.

“I’ve had a plan for a couple of weeks now for who I wanted to go after, and now it’s just about executing that plan,” Hafley explained. He aims to finalize these hires by the end of the weekend.

Coordinator Interviews and Staffing Changes

The Dolphins have initiated permission requests to interview candidates for crucial coaching positions. They have sought to interview Dallas Cowboys’ assistant special teams coordinator Carlos Polk for their coordinator role. Additionally, Jerrod Johnson, the quarterbacks coach for the Houston Texans, is set to interview for the offensive coordinator position next Wednesday.

Other potential candidates include Bobby Slowik, currently the Dolphins’ passing game coordinator, and Adam Stenavich, offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. While Hafley is keen to retain some coaching personnel, he confirmed that cornerbacks coach Mathieu Araujo will not return, as he is expected to join the Jaguars’ staff.

Quarterback Strategy

Once the coaching staff is in place, Hafley and the offensive coordinator will turn their attention to finding and developing the team’s next franchise quarterback. General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan will lead this search, with assistance from Hafley.

“There will 100% be guys that are here who will compete for that job, whether that’s going out and finding one in the draft or free agency,” Hafley stated. “That’s going to be a huge part of this whole thing.”

Prospective Quarterback Candidates

One name garnering attention in quarterback discussions is Malik Willis, a free agent and former third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans. Hafley emphasized the importance of Willis, who previously served as the scout team quarterback during Hafley’s tenure in Green Bay. “He’s a great athlete. He’s smart. He can throw it and make off-schedule plays,” Hafley noted.

With Willis representing a compelling option due to his youth and athleticism, the Dolphins may still face challenges in securing him, though they are expected to be active in the pursuit.

  • Key Updates:
    • Hafley will finalize coaching staff by weekend.
    • Candidate interviews include Jerrod Johnson and Carlos Polk.
    • Malik Willis is a potential quarterback target.

As the Dolphins navigate these significant staffing changes and quarterback decisions, Hafley’s strategic insights may shape the team’s future in the NFL.
