Winnipeggers Support Minnesota Neighbors During ICE Crackdown

Winnipeggers are actively expressing their support for their neighbors in Minnesota affected by recent immigration enforcement actions. Business owners in Winnipeg are motivated to contribute to the well-being of those impacted by the crackdown led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), primarily centered in Minneapolis, located about 620 kilometers south of Winnipeg.

Community Initiatives in Winnipeg

One prominent initiative comes from Oh Doughnuts, a local gourmet pastry shop. Owner Amanda Kinden announced that a portion of the proceeds from their special “F ICE” doughnuts would be donated to the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM). These doughnuts are uniquely shaped like the letter “F” and adorned with vanilla sprinkles, symbolizing solidarity. They were sold out on a recent Friday.

The “Be Good” doughnut, another option available, serves as a tribute to Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother tragically shot by an ICE agent on January 7. Kinden emphasized the injustices associated with ICE’s actions, stating, “What’s happening there makes me feel pretty helpless. It could happen here.”

Knitting for Change

Winnipeg’s knitting community is also taking action. A knit-along event at the Wolseley Wool shop saw over a dozen participants come together to create “Melt the ICE” hats. These hats honor the efforts of a Minneapolis store that held its own protest initiative. Participants at Wolseley Wool aim to raise funds for individuals directly affected by ICE’s actions.

The caps, inspired by historical Norwegian protests against Nazi occupation, are red with a tassel. Proceeds from the sale of the knitting pattern will go towards those impacted by the immigration enforcement. Justin Zaharia, co-owner of Wolseley Wool, expressed the importance of community involvement, stating, “We want to create space for everyone to gather.”

Solidarity in Difficult Times

Both Oh Doughnuts and Wolseley Wool exemplify the unity among Winnipeggers during troubling times. Many locals feel a deep connection to residents of Minneapolis and are guided by a collective desire for justice and support.
