Prison Gang Leader Who Demanded Luxury Bed May Still Escape
Guatemalan authorities recently regained control of three prisons following violent riots orchestrated by the notorious Barrio 18 gang, led by Aldo Duppie Ochoa Mejia, known as “El Lobo.” This incident unfolded on January 17, 2026, when the gang’s leader made extravagant demands in exchange for an end to the chaos.
Barriers to Negotiation
“El Lobo” demanded several luxury amenities, including air conditioning, a king-size bed, and meals from gourmet restaurants. In response, the Guatemalan government firmly refused to negotiate with what is classified as a terrorist organization.
- Demands from El Lobo:
- Transfer from Renovación 1 prison to a different facility
- Installation of air conditioning in his cell
- Permission for a king-size bed
- Delivery of food from select restaurants
Government Response
Marco Antonio Villeda, the Guatemalan Minister of Interior, confirmed that the riots were carefully orchestrated by Barrio 18. Villeda attributed the unrest to the withdrawal of certain privileges and stricter control over prisoner visitation rights. He stated, “There is neither the will nor the intention to restore privileges or to transfer them to the prisons of their choosing.”
The government has maintained a strong stance against the gang. Villeda emphasized, “Our resolve will be firm and our actions decisive,” while highlighting that the inmates are responsible for the safety of the prison guards taken hostage. A total of 45 guards and one psychologist were initially held captive; however, all hostages were successfully rescued by Sunday, January 18.
Current Situation
Authorities established security perimeters around the three affected prisons to safeguard the civilian population and prevent any escape attempts. There are concerns that El Lobo may try to orchestrate an escape amid the crisis.
- Key Highlights:
- No injuries or deaths reported during the riots.
- Fires confirmed in administrative areas of the prisons.
- Government forces, including the National Civil Police and military, are actively involved in maintaining order.
The situation remains tense as authorities take measures to stabilize the prisons and ensure the safety of both guards and inmates amidst ongoing threats from the Barrio 18 gang.
