The primary date for these homage celebrations falls on February 2, coinciding with Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, a significant day in the Catholic calendar. This occasion has recently been declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage by Rio de Janeiro’s mayor, Eduardo Paes, and now features on the city’s official calendar.

Anticipation builds as approximately 30,000 people are expected to gather at Arpoador to mark this special day. The event is spearheaded by musician Marcos André and showcases the participation of about 450 religious leaders from the Umbanda and Candomblé faiths. Artists from local quilombos, associated with Jongo, Samba, and Afoxé, will also perform during the celebrations.
