“Sinners and Hamnet Dominate Bafta Nominations”

“Sinners and Hamnet Dominate Bafta Nominations”

At the upcoming Bafta Film Awards, nominations are led by Leonardo DiCaprio’s politically charged thriller “One Battle After Another,” which garnered 14 nominations. Following closely are the horror film “Sinners” with 13 nominations and the Shakespearean drama “Hamnet” alongside the table-tennis biopic “Marty Supreme,” both of which received 11 nominations.

Sinners and Hamnet Among Top Nominated Films

The acting category sees strong contenders such as Timothée Chalamet and Jessie Buckley, both of whom are favorites for the Oscars. Notably, actors Chase Infiniti and Paul Mescal received recognition at the Baftas despite being absent from the Oscar nominations.

More Slots for Nominations

This year’s Bafta Awards feature expanded nomination categories, allowing for six nominees in many fields, compared to five at the Oscars. In addition, the Baftas celebrate UK talent with specific categories like Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer.

  • Outstanding British Films: “I Swear,” “Pillion,” “H is for Hawk,” and “The Ballad of Wallis Island” are among the highlighted British films.

Bafta chair Sara Putt expressed excitement over the mix of British indie films with blockbusters. However, no film has matched the record of 16 nominations achieved by “Gandhi” in 1982.

Event Details

The Bafta Film Awards will take place at the Royal Festival Hall in London on 22 February. The event will be hosted by actor Alan Cumming.

Notable Nominees Missing from the Baftas

Several Oscar nominees did not receive Bafta recognition, including:

  • Amy Madigan (“Weapons”)
  • Delroy Lindo (“Sinners”)
  • Wagner Moura (“The Secret Agent”)
  • Elle Fanning (“Sentimental Value”)

Conversely, some performers who missed out on Oscar nominations, such as Jesse Plemons (“Bugonia”) and Odessa A’Zion (“Marty Supreme”), received Bafta nominations.

Additional Nominees at the Baftas

Other British nominees include Robert Aramayo and Peter Mullan from “I Swear,” Carey Mulligan from “The Ballad of Wallis Island,” and Emily Watson in “Hamnet.” Wunmi Mosaku from “Sinners” is another repeat nominee.

While “Wicked: For Good” missed out at the Oscars, it earned two nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hair at the Baftas. Brazilian thriller “The Secret Agent” received two nominations, half of its Oscar count.

Director Nominees

The director nominations mirror those at the Oscars, but the Baftas added Yorgos Lanthimos for the conspiracy drama “Bugonia.”

Brad Pitt’s racing drama “F1” found success with three nominations in technical categories, but it did not secure a spot in the Best Picture category as it did at the Oscars.

Eligibility Controversy

One notable absence from the nominations is the Netflix hit “KPop Demon Hunters.” Released directly on Netflix in the UK, it was deemed ineligible for Bafta longlists due to lacking a theatrical run.
