Canucks’ Goalie Demko Undergoes Hip Surgery, Out for the Season

Thatcher Demko, the goaltender for the Vancouver Canucks, is scheduled to undergo hip surgery. The team confirmed that he will miss the remainder of the season due to this procedure.

Details on Demko’s Injury and Surgery

General Manager Patrik Allvin announced the decision. He stated that Demko is being shut down for the year after consulting with doctors and specialists. The injury prompting the surgery is unrelated to the previous year’s issues.

Demko, aged 30, suffered a lower-body injury during a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on January 10. He was pulled from the game after allowing three goals on six shots in the first period, leading to a 5-0 loss for the Canucks.

Season Performance

  • Record: 8 wins, 10 losses, and 1 overtime loss this season.
  • Save Percentage: .897.
  • Goals Against Average: 2.90.

This season, Demko played in only 20 out of 44 games. His previous injury kept him sidelined for 12 games from November 11 to December 11. This marks his second consecutive season dealing with injuries.

Past Achievements

In the last fully healthy season of 2023-24, Demko was selected as an All-Star. He finished second in Vezina Trophy voting, boasting a .918 save percentage and a 2.45 goals-against average in 51 games.

Future Prospects

Demko has signed a three-year contract extension worth $25.5 million, keeping him with the Canucks until the end of the 2028-29 season. Following his surgery and rehabilitation, he is expected to return and be ready for training camp in September.
