Browns Appoint Ex-Ravens Coordinator Todd Monken as Head Coach
The Cleveland Browns have officially appointed Todd Monken as their new head coach, as announced on Wednesday. Monken comes to Cleveland after serving three seasons as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. Under his direction, the Ravens’ offense excelled in 2024, leading the NFL in total yards and yards per play.
Todd Monken’s Coaching Background
This new role marks a return to Cleveland for Monken, who previously was the team’s offensive coordinator in 2019 under head coach Freddie Kitchens. That season ended in turmoil, resulting in the firing of the entire coaching staff. Monken, who will turn 60 next week, holds 11 years of experience in NFL coaching. His only head coaching position was at Southern Miss from 2013 to 2015, after which he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as offensive coordinator in 2016.
Browns’ Search for a Head Coach
The Browns fired head coach Kevin Stefanski on January 5 and initiated a thorough search for his replacement. They conducted nine initial interviews and narrowed down their choices, ultimately interviewing five candidates: Monken, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz, Jaguars offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, Rams pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, and Commanders run game coordinator Anthony Lynn. Notably, Lynn was interviewed in South Florida, while Scheelhaase’s interview followed the Rams’ loss in the NFC Championship Game.
Finalist Selection
- Monken
- Schwartz
- Scheelhaase
After reviewing the finalists, the Browns made a swift decision to hire Monken on Wednesday. He is recognized as a respected offensive strategist with a wealth of experience, including seven previous seasons as an offensive coordinator. His tenure at the University of Georgia from 2016 to 2018 further solidifies his credentials.
Challenges Ahead for Monken
As he steps into this role, Monken faces significant challenges. He must work closely with general manager Andrew Berry, who remains with the organization following staff changes. Together, they will address critical issues in the Browns’ offensive roster. Key areas for improvement include:
- Rebuilding the offensive line
- Upgrading the receiving corps
- Establishing stability at quarterback
The Browns struggled with quarterback consistency, having used five different starters in 2023 and four in 2024. Monken’s experience will be crucial in navigating these challenges.
Building a Coaching Staff
Monken will begin assembling his coaching staff, which may include Schwartz, who has led one of the NFL’s top defenses in recent years. The NFL’s Rooney Rule mandates that the Browns conduct interviews for key coordinator positions. Monken’s plans for play-calling have yet to be confirmed.
This appointment signals a new direction for the Browns as they seek to enhance their competitive edge in the NFL. With Monken at the helm, fans and analysts alike will be watching eagerly to see how he shapes the team’s future.
