McKenna Excels Outdoors for Penn State at Beaver Stadium
McKenna’s remarkable outdoor hockey experience at Beaver Stadium has become a memorable moment in his young career. Growing up in Whitehorse, Yukon, he was no stranger to skating outside. However, stepping onto the ice in front of nearly 75,000 enthusiastic fans was a completely different challenge.
Signs of Growth for Penn State Hockey
Penn State head coach Guy Gadowsky reflected on the journey of the hockey program since his arrival in 2011. He was instrumental in the team’s transition to Division I, making significant strides over the years.
- Opened Pegula Ice Arena during the 2012-13 season
- First NHL draft selection occurred in 2017
- Secured the first Frozen Four appearance last season
Hosting an outdoor game at Beaver Stadium represents another impressive milestone for the program.
A Unique Atmosphere
As Gadowsky walked into Beaver Stadium, he was overwhelmed by the crowd. “It felt like so much effort had led us to this moment,” he explained. He expressed gratitude toward those who had supported the program over the years, including Terry Pegula, the owner of the Buffalo Sabres and key benefactor.
Although the team faced a setback with a loss to Michigan State just days prior, the spirit of the event remained uplifting. Gadowsky noted, “75,000 fans came in the cold and stayed for the whole game. It was an amazing atmosphere.” He emphasized the unforgettable experience shared by the players and community.
Memorable Experiences on Ice
Captain Dowiak, who contributed three assists while playing alongside McKenna and Fink, shared his thoughts on the unparalleled environment. “No matter my future in the NHL, that was the coolest environment I’ll ever play in,” he remarked.
McKenna, currently an 18-year-old freshman, is excelling in his role on the team. With 32 points, including 11 goals and 21 assists in 24 games, he ranks among the top NCAA freshmen. His impressive scoring average of 1.33 points per game places him among the best players nationwide.
Looking Ahead
Listed as the top North American skater in NHL Central Scouting’s midseason rankings, McKenna’s future in professional hockey appears bright. However, he remains focused on the present, appreciating the opportunity to skate for Penn State.
“Being part of the Penn State community is an honor,” he stated. “I’ll always cherish this experience.” As McKenna and his teammates move forward, the memories made at Beaver Stadium will undoubtedly resonate for years to come.
