Perfect Conditions Await Annual Loppet Event at Little Red
The annual Loppet event at Little Red River Park drew over 100 cross-country skiing enthusiasts last Sunday. The Prince Albert Nordic Ski Club organized the event, which featured excellent skiing conditions.
Ideal Conditions for Ski Enthusiasts
Organizer Mike Horn from Fresh Air Experience noted that the trails were in impressive condition. He attributed this to recent snowfall, which improved the area that had previously faced severe wind and melt challenges.
Event Highlights
- Date: Last Sunday
- Location: Little Red River Park
- Participants: Over 100, including youth and seniors
- Distances Offered: 1, 6.5, 17.5, 25, or 32 kilometers
- Event Type: Recreational skiing
Participants ranged from young Jackrabbits to seniors, making the event family-friendly. While some skiers aimed for personal bests, Horn emphasized that the focus remained on recreation and community building. “This is all about getting people together who like to ski,” he stated.
A Unique Experience
According to Horn, the loppet is comparable to a marathon, representing a premier skiing experience. At the starting point, located at the Cosmo Lodge, skiers were sent out onto various trails with pre-determined routes suited to their chosen distance.
Two checkpoints were strategically placed along the trails. Volunteers at these locations provided participants with hot refreshments and snacks. After completing the course, skiers were invited to enjoy a hot chili lunch, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie among competitors.
Cross-Country Skiing’s Global Appeal
This skiing event coincided with the lead-up to the Winter Olympics in Italy, which also features cross-country skiing as a key competition. For those participating in the Loppet, it served as their own Olympic experience, delivering both physical exercise and community connection.
