Winter Olympics 2024: Daily Schedule and Highlights
The Winter Olympics 2024 is set to feature exciting events, showcasing top athletes from around the world. Here’s the daily schedule and highlights of the anticipated competitions.
February 8, 2024 Events
Alpine Skiing: Women’s Downhill
The Women’s downhill event will take place from 10:30 to 12:50. This race marks the return of acclaimed American skier Lindsey Vonn. Six years after her retirement, the 41-year-old aims to make a comeback in her specialty event. She holds a record of 45 World Cup wins in downhill skiing and won her Olympic gold medal in 2010.
Despite having a setback due to a crash in the final World Cup downhill race, Vonn remains a focal point. Another athlete to watch is Breezy Johnson, the 2025 world champion. The host nation hopes to see an athlete on the podium, especially with World Cup champion Federica Brignone just returning from a long injury layoff. Sofia Goggia, who won silver four years ago, is also a contender despite her recent knee injury.
Cross Country Skiing: Men’s Skiathlon
The men’s skiathlon event runs from 11:30 to 12:50. This will be the fifth Winter Olympics appearance for Britain’s Andrew Musgrave, who achieved his best result of seventh place in 2018. In the skiathlon, competitors complete a 10km classical segment before switching to freestyle for another 10km. Norway’s Johannes Høsflot Klæbo enters as the world champion and a strong medal contender.
Snowboard: Women’s Big Air Qualification
The women’s big air qualification occurs from 18:30 to 20:45. Britain’s Mia Brookes, at just 19 years old, could emerge as the youngest Winter Olympic medallist in 78 years. She enters the Games with back-to-back World Cup titles in big air and recent success at the X Games.
Brookes will face stiff competition from Japan’s Kokomo Murase, Reira Iwabuchi, and Mari Fukada, who swept the medals at last year’s World Championships. Austria’s Anna Gasser, aiming for a third consecutive gold medal, is another notable competitor in this stacked field.
Britain’s Maisie Hill will also participate, having overcome a serious training accident three years ago.
Figure Skating: Team Competition Final
The team figure skating event will culminate at 20:55 with the men’s free skate segment. The USA clinched gold in the previous Olympics after the Russian team faced disqualification, leading to a delayed medal ceremony of over two years. As the reigning World Team Trophy champions, the USA won three of four individual events at last year’s World Championships. However, Japan and Georgia are expected to present formidable challenges.
Stay tuned for these thrilling competitions and witness history in the making at the Winter Olympics 2024.
