Lavrov Denounces Claims of Russian Meddling in Armenian Elections

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has publicly condemned allegations of Russian interference in Armenia’s political affairs. His comments arose during a meeting with Armenian Parliamentary Speaker Alen Simonyan in Moscow.

Claims of Russian Meddling and Hybrid Warfare

Lavrov expressed confusion over the suggestions made by Armenian officials concerning imminent “imaginary attacks” from Russia. He referred to accusations implying that the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) poses an “existential threat” to Armenia.

During his remarks, Lavrov emphasized that such claims perplex him. “It is somewhat puzzling for us to hear someone say now and then that some imaginary attacks are being prepared… against Armenia,” he stated. These comments seem to reference prior statements made by Simonyan and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Context of Statements

In May 2025, Simonyan indicated that financial support was flowing from “our northern neighbour,” a clear reference to Russia. He warned that these actions signify a “hybrid war” being waged against Armenia, particularly as parliamentary elections approach in 2026.

Pashinyan has also criticized CSTO’s support, noting that Armenia had not received weaponry it had already purchased, describing this as an “existential threat.”

EU’s Role in Armenian Elections

Lavrov addressed remarks made by European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, who claimed that Armenia had sought assistance to combat alleged “malign influences” ahead of the 2026 elections. Kallas specifically accused Russia and its allies of orchestrating disinformation campaigns in Armenia.

Concerns Over Accelerated Hybrid Threats

  • Armenian leaders have voiced concerns about growing hybrid threats before the elections.
  • Lavrov warned against narratives designed to foster distrust between Armenia and Russia.
  • Simonyan reassured Lavrov of Armenia’s intent to maintain strong ties with Russia despite existing challenges.

Simonyan expressed his worries over public rhetoric in Russia, noting that it causes anxiety not just for the Armenian government but for society at large. He stressed the historical importance of Moscow as an ally and stated it is painful for Armenians to hear such accusatory statements.

Meetings and Ongoing Diplomacy

While in Moscow, Simonyan held discussions with Russian officials, including his counterpart Valentina Matvienko. The talks covered a variety of topics, including the ongoing peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

In these interactions, Simonyan reiterated Armenia’s commitment to its partnership with Russia. He aimed to reinforce solidarity amid heightened tensions and accusations surrounding the upcoming elections.
