Hamilton Soldier’s Funeral Scheduled Monday Following Latvia Deployment Death
Funeral arrangements have been established for Gunner Sebastian Christian Halmagean, a Canadian Armed Forces member from Hamilton. Halmagean passed away during his deployment in Latvia while serving with the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade.
Visitation and Burial Details
The visitation will take place at Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home in Ancaster. Friends and well-wishers are invited to pay their respects on Sunday, between 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The family requests that condolences be brief to honor their needs during this difficult time.
A graveside service is scheduled for Monday at 11:30 a.m. Halmagean will be laid to rest at Woodland Cemetery in the Field of Honour located in Burlington.
Service Background and Deployment
Gunner Halmagean was serving on Operation REASSURANCE, a mission supporting NATO’s presence in Latvia. He was a member of the 4th Artillery Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, which is part of the 6 Canadian Combat Support Brigade. His base was 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, New Brunswick.
Having enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces for nearly three years, this deployment to Latvia marked his first experience outside Canada. Halmagean’s reported death occurred at Camp Labrie on Ceri Military Base on January 29.
Investigation Update
Following his death, Halmagean’s body was returned to Canada and received by his family on Tuesday. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently under investigation by the Canadian Forces Military Police, with assistance from the Latvian State Police.
