Arsenal Boss’s Intensity Left Me Hiding in Fearful Retreat
Steve McClaren, a former England manager, recently shared his daunting experience facing Arsenal during his early days managing Middlesbrough. This revelation was made during an episode of “The Managers” podcast featuring Mick McCarthy and Tony Pulis.
Overwhelmed by the Challenge
McClaren took charge of Middlesbrough in 2001, following a notable stint as assistant manager at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson. Despite his extensive experience, he found his initial weeks as a manager exceptionally challenging. In his first four matches, Middlesbrough did not secure a victory, scoring zero goals while conceding 13.
Facing Arsène Wenger
The pressure intensified when McClaren faced Arsène Wenger’s Arsenal. Their rivalry was fierce, especially given McClaren’s previous role at United. He recalled feeling overwhelmed before the match, stating, “I just passed Arsène Wenger,” which spurred anxiety rather than confidence.
“I couldn’t get out of the toilet,” he admitted. “I was telling myself, ‘Come on, McClaren, you’ve got to face it!’”
Adapting to New Realities
Realizing his team was not equipped to play like Manchester United, McClaren had to reevaluate his strategy. He introduced key players such as Brian Deane and Alen Boksic into the lineup. His tactical shift involved reinforcing the defense, instructing the defenders to prioritize clean sheets, aiming to win matches narrowly.
Legacy and Further Career
Despite a rocky start, McClaren found success at Middlesbrough, winning the League Cup in 2004 and reaching the UEFA Cup final in 2006. After his tenure, he briefly managed the England national team, but he was dismissed following failure to qualify for Euro 2008.
His subsequent career included winning the Dutch league title with Twente in 2010 and managing several clubs, including Wolfsburg, Nottingham Forest, and Newcastle United. Recently, he resigned from his role with the Jamaican national team after they missed World Cup qualification.
