Verlander Signs One-Year Deal to Rejoin Tigers

Justin Verlander is set to rejoin the Detroit Tigers under a one-year contract valued at $13 million. This agreement marks a return for the veteran pitcher to his original Major League Baseball team. The deal, finalized on Tuesday, includes $11 million in deferred payments commencing in 2030.

Verlander’s Career and Recent Struggles

As he approaches his 43rd birthday on February 20, Verlander aims to rebound from a challenging season with the San Francisco Giants. A three-time AL Cy Young Award recipient, he accumulated 266 career victories, ranking him 34th on baseball’s all-time list. His impressive strikeout tally of 3,553 positions him eighth overall, closely behind Don Sutton, who has 3,574 strikeouts.

Turning Point in the 2022 Season

Last season, Verlander struggled significantly, starting with an 0-8 record in his initial outings. He did not secure a win until July 23 against Atlanta. Ultimately, Verlander finished the season with a 4-11 record, a 3.85 ERA, and 137 strikeouts over 29 starts, covering 152 innings.

  • Initial struggles: 0-8 record
  • Season finish: 4-11 record, 3.85 ERA
  • Strikeouts: 137 over 29 starts

However, he demonstrated resilience. Following a month-long injury layoff due to a strained right pectoral muscle, Verlander returned to form starting July 23, posting a 2.60 ERA, which ranked fourth in the National League for pitchers with at least 60 innings pitched.

Looking Ahead

Verlander expressed a commitment to improving his performance and remains motivated to continue playing. He stated that the first half of last season was challenging but emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset and persistent work ethic.

With this latest deal, the Detroit Tigers have welcomed back one of baseball’s veteran pitchers, potentially setting the stage for a more successful season in 2023.
