Avalanche Alert: Red Warning Issued for Mont Blanc, Savoie Heights

Severe snowfall is expected in the Alps due to the storm system Nils. Météo-France has issued a red avalanche warning for Savoie, effective Thursday. This situation poses a significant risk of avalanches, particularly in the Haute-Tarentaise region and near Mont Blanc.

Avalanche Risk Assessments

Météo-France has issued a prediction indicating “remarkable” avalanche conditions for Thursday. The warning specifically highlights increased vigilance around the villages of Villaroger, Tignes, and Val d’Isère. In addition, an orange warning remains in effect for Hautes-Alpes, Isère, Savoie, and Haute-Savoie.

Risk Levels

  • Avalanche risk index: Very high (5 on the European risk scale).
  • Affected areas: Mont-Blanc, Aravis, Chablais, Beaufortain, Haute-Tarentaise, and Vanoise.
  • Oisans (Isère): Risk levels evolving from high (4) to very high (5).

Snowfall Predictions and Consequences

Fresh snowfall may exceed one meter in certain locations. This is likely to trigger numerous large avalanches on Thursday, especially at higher altitudes. Some avalanches could impact roads and mountain infrastructure, and potentially reach residential areas in Haute-Tarentaise situated above 1,800 meters.

Météo-France warns that very large avalanches could descend to valley levels as low as 1,200 to 1,400 meters. Given these perilous conditions, visitors to the ski resorts are urged to exercise caution, particularly concerning off-piste skiing where avalanche risks are heightened.

Skiing Safety Concerns

This avalanche alert occurs amidst peak ski season in the Alpine resorts. Authorities continue to stress the importance of safety, as over twenty skiers and snowshoers have lost their lives this year due to avalanches across various Alpine regions, including France, Austria, and Switzerland.
