Snow Likely to Hit Metro Vancouver’s High-Elevation Regions
Snow is anticipated in the high-elevation areas of British Columbia, particularly on the South Coast, starting Monday. A winter storm warning is also in effect for the northeastern regions of the province. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement regarding this incoming weather pattern.
Weather Conditions for Metro Vancouver
A low-pressure system from Alaska is set to impact regions such as Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, and the Sunshine Coast. Snowfall is expected above 300 meters in elevation. However, meteorologist Terri Lang indicates that the snowfall will be intermittent and not substantial.
- Areas above 300 meters may experience snowfall.
- Low-pressure system expected to arrive Monday.
For residents in Metro Vancouver’s North Shore, while snow is possible, it is unlikely to accumulate significantly. Lang noted that the conditions are not sufficient to enhance the snow pack at local ski resorts.
Impact on Ski Resorts
Many ski hills in British Columbia have struggled with minimal snowfall this winter. The current weather system is regarded as less effective than anticipated for snow accumulation on ski slopes. Lang points out that it is “not your typical big snow maker.”
Snowfall Expectations on Vancouver Island
On the contrary, the mountains on Vancouver Island might receive more favorable conditions with potential snowfall as the weather progresses down the coast. Lang stated that while precipitation is expected, substantial snowfall amounts are still not forecasted.
Winter Storm Warning in the Peace Region
A different weather system affecting the Peace River region is expected to create more severe conditions. Areas such as Fort St. John, Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, and Tumbler Ridge could face reduced visibility and challenging weather. This system will bring up to 25 cm of snow by mid-Tuesday.
- Northeasterly winds of 30 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h.
- Snowfall may lead to sudden white-out conditions.
- Temperatures will drop to the mid to low -20s °C.
Wind chill factors may make it feel as cold as -35 to -40 °C from tonight through Wednesday morning. Drivers are advised to use caution, maintain visibility, and reduce speed due to difficult road conditions.
