Quebec Pee-Wee Tournament: Unyielding Passion of Abitibi Youth Shines!
The passion of youth hockey players is on full display at the Quebec Pee-Wee Tournament. Among the teams participating is the Academy of Forestiers from Abitibi-Témiscamingue. These talented young athletes are not just playing for fun; their journey to the tournament is a monumental achievement.
Abitibi Youth’s Journey to the Tournament
The Abitibi players kicked off their tournament on Sunday with an impressive victory over the Hershey Bears in the AA-Elite category. Their next game is scheduled for Wednesday at the Centre Vidéotron. This is a remarkable feat for the team, considering the challenges they face.
Many players, aged between 12 and 13, have relocated to Amos to pursue their studies in sports-études. Interestingly, not all players are locals. This season, ten players are living away from their families. They have come from different cities, including:
- Five from Rouyn-Noranda
- Three from Val-d’Or
- Two from La Sarre
While their families are not far away, with travel times of one to one-and-a-half hours, the decision to leave home is significant. Cindy Garneau, the team manager, explains that for many, playing in Amos is essential for their hockey development. “If they do not play here, they will remain at a lower local level,” she stated.
Challenges Faced by Young Athletes
The road to success is not easy. The young players experience the added pressures of transitioning to secondary school while also playing competitive hockey. “It’s a lot of changes happening at once,” Garneau noted. However, they receive incredible support from their dedicated coaching staff.
The players endure long bus rides throughout the season, often traveling six to eight hours for away games. The Academy of Forestiers, a part of the Quebec Excellence Hockey League (LHEQ), must travel extensively. They journey to cities like Gatineau, Montreal, and the Laurentians, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to the sport.
A Unique Tournament Experience
The Academy last participated in the Quebec Pee-Wee Tournament in 2018. For the current season, their participation was contingent on performing well in a selection tournament in Trois-Rivières. “Patrick Dom and the tournament organizers were extremely understanding of our situation,” Garneau remarked.
Upon receiving the invitation, an emotional wave swept through the team. Coach Martin Rondeau expressed how memorable the moment was for both him and the players. “I had played in the tournament in 1993 and never got the chance to return. This time, I have the privilege of watching my son play,” he shared.
Some parents chose to take unpaid leave from work, recognizing the importance of this unique opportunity. “Everyone deserves to experience this tournament. I think we deserve it even more!” Garneau concluded.
