Expansion Plans for 7-Eleven in Canada

According to Marc Goodman, the vice-president and general manager of 7-Eleven Canada, the chain is embarking on a five-year strategy to enhance its presence in the country. This move is essential as competition has intensified from various retail outlets.

Competitive Landscape

  • Walmart has established itself in cities with populations over 10,000.
  • Discount stores and grocery chains have also begun offering a wide range of snacks and ready-to-eat meals.
  • Food trucks and fast-food chains are increasingly vying for market share.

Goodman highlighted that traditional convenience store offerings are now competing with these growing segments. Moreover, during the past two years, Alimentation Couche-Tard attempted to acquire 7-Eleven’s parent company, Seven & i Holdings, though this bid ultimately did not materialize.

Shifting Business Model

As it adapts to the evolving market, 7-Eleven plans to revamp its business model and explore franchising opportunities. Currently, the chain operates 550 corporately-owned stores from Ontario to British Columbia.

Future Plans

Goodman expressed ambitions to expand into the Maritimes and Quebec through franchising. The company aims to evolve into a quick-service restaurant model, offering an increased focus on quality meals and diverse food items.

  • Current offerings include beer and wine in some locations.
  • Fresh food items like samosas sourced from India and on-site prepared crispy chicken.
  • Four commissaries across Canada produce food for stores, ensuring freshness.

In the coming years, Goodman anticipates a rise in fresh food and hot meal sales, alongside proprietary beverages. The introduction of the tamago sando is just one step in 7-Eleven’s journey to bring more popular Japanese food items to Canadian shelves, following its success with onigiri.
