Dave Grohl Addresses Josh Freese’s Departure from Foo Fighters
In spring 2025, the Foo Fighters announced a significant change in their lineup: drummer Josh Freese would be departing the band. Freese shared the news on Instagram, where he expressed gratitude for his time with the group. He noted that the decision was made without a specified reason, stating, “Regardless, I enjoyed the past two years with them, both on and off stage.”
Josh Freese’s Journey with Foo Fighters
Freese joined the Foo Fighters in 2022, initially participating as a guest drummer in tribute concerts for the band’s late drummer, Taylor Hawkins. His transition to a permanent member came soon thereafter. However, in 2024, the band took a break from touring, which allowed space for reflection on their future direction.
Announcement of Departure
In a recent interview with Apple Music 1, Dave Grohl elaborated on how the decision to move on from Freese was reached. He noted that it was not an overnight choice, emphasizing that the decision involved discussions among all band members. Grohl recounted the conversation: “We called Josh and were like, ‘Hey man, that was awesome. That was such a blast, thank you so much, but we are going to move on and find another drummer.’”
New Direction for Foo Fighters
A few months after Freese’s departure was announced, it was revealed that Ilan Rubin, known for his work with Nine Inch Nails, would join the band. This reshuffling marked another chapter for the Foo Fighters as they continue to evolve. Freese, in turn, returned to Nine Inch Nails, where he had previously contributed as a touring member from 2005 to 2008.
Reflections on Taylor Hawkins
The challenge of replacing Hawkins, who passed away at 50 due to a drug overdose, greatly impacted the band. Hawkins, who had been with Foo Fighters for 25 years, was more than just a drummer; he was a close friend and integral to the band’s identity. Grohl described the complexity of moving forward without him, stating, “Continuing after Taylor was really complicated for us, but also for any drummer that was going to come in.”
Grohl indicated that they often reflect on Hawkins during their creative process, saying, “In everything we do, we want to have that energy for Taylor.” The Foo Fighters plan to kick off their upcoming stadium tour on August 4 in Toronto.
