Essyla Represents Belgium at Eurovision 2026 with “Dancing on the Ice”
Essyla, a promising Belgian artist, will represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 in Vienna. The Belgian broadcaster RTBF (Radio-télévision belge de la Communauté française) has selected her internally. Her song, “Dancing on the Ice,” was also released recently.
About Essyla and “Dancing on the Ice”
Essyla is the stage name of Alice Van Eesbeeck. She hails from Perwez in Walloon Brabant. Her song “Dancing on the Ice” was co-written with Nicolas d’Avell, Emil Stengele, and Barbara Petitjean.
RTBF chose Essyla through an internal selection, a process that allows for direct appointment rather than a national final. This system alternates between Belgium’s two public broadcasters. For 2026, it was RTBF’s responsibility to select the act.
Essyla’s Reflections on Her Selection
- “I don’t fully realize,” Essyla expressed, sharing her mixed feelings about representing Belgium.
- “There is stress; I want to give everything so that my country is proud,” she added.
- Essyla emphasized her excitement: “It’s a completely crazy adventure, a dream that I’ve been chasing since I was little.”
Essyla’s Musical Journey
Essyla gained prominence after reaching the Final of the ninth season of The Voice Belgique in 2021. She has a strong musical background, having formed her first band at a young age and refined her technique at IMEP music school in Namur.
Her musical influences range from French chansons to jazz, folk, rock, and funk. Essyla’s work often explores themes of empowerment and the experiences of young women, making her music relatable and heartfelt.
Past Works
Before her Eurovision selection, Essyla released several singles, including:
- “Let You Go”
- “Not My Kind of Dude”
These tracks garnered significant attention on radio, leading to her debut EP titled “I’ll Be Okay.”
Belgium’s Eurovision History
Belgium has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 66 times since its inception in 1956. The country won the contest in 1986 with Sandra Kim’s “J’aime La Vie.” However, Belgium has faced challenges, finishing in last place eight times, including instances with zero points.
Since the introduction of semi-finals in 2004, Belgium has qualified for the Grand Final 9 out of 21 times. Notably, in 2010, the country secured the first position in Semi-final 1.
As Essyla prepares for the upcoming competition, all eyes will be on her performance of “Dancing on the Ice,” as Belgium aims for another successful year at Eurovision.
