Joe Hortiz Discusses McDaniel, Oweh, and Johnson at 2026 NFL Combine

Joe Hortiz recently addressed the ongoing challenges the Los Angeles Chargers face as the NFL Combine approaches in 2026. Key issues highlighted include the potential free agency of several offensive linemen, particularly Zion Johnson, and the hiring of Chris O’Leary as the new defensive coordinator.

Zion Johnson’s Free Agency Outlook

Zion Johnson, a first-round pick in 2022, is projected to be one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason. As a left guard, Johnson displayed strong performance throughout 2025, missing only a single snap in the regular season due to team rest strategies.

Hortiz acknowledged that Johnson’s 26-year-old age, coupled with his ascending talent, will attract numerous teams. He stated, “We’ll meet with his agent this week. We’ve talked to him already and we’ll continue the dialogue.” Hortiz also mentioned that they have a flexible salary range in mind for Johnson.

  • Chargers Free Agents:
  • Zion Johnson
  • Jamaree Salyer
  • Trey Pipkins III
  • Andre James
  • Bobby Hart
  • Austin Deculus
  • Trevor Penning

The Chargers front office will need to focus on these key players as the market evolves, especially with the recent retirement of Bradley Bozeman, emphasizing the importance of the offensive line.

Chris O’Leary Takes the Helm as Defensive Coordinator

The Chargers appointed Chris O’Leary as their new defensive coordinator, enhancing their coaching staff. O’Leary previously served as safeties coach and had an impressive run as defensive coordinator at Western Michigan in 2025.

During his time at Western Michigan, O’Leary’s defense ranked second in the Mid-American Conference for scoring defense, allowing just 17.4 points per game. They also placed second in yards allowed per game, with a total of 305.5, and ranked 19th in the country in passing yards allowed, at 179.9.

O’Leary’s Interview Impressions

Hortiz noted the standout qualities that led to O’Leary’s selection, including his energetic personality and insightful plans for the team’s future. “He showed great preparedness for the interview,” Hortiz remarked. “His creativity and ideas indicate he’s ready to advance the defense.”

Despite being an underdog in the hiring process, O’Leary impressed the team’s executives with his vision and knowledge. Hortiz emphasized the significance of O’Leary’s prior experience in a collegiate play-calling role, noting that it would benefit him moving forward in the NFL.

As the Chargers continue to navigate personnel decisions and coaching changes, both Johnson’s potential free agency and O’Leary’s hiring will be pivotal in shaping the team’s future strategy.
