“Achieving My Dream: A Personal Milestone”

Roland Delorme, a mixed martial artist from Winnipeg, fondly remembers a pivotal moment in his career. On June 15, 2013, he stepped into the octagon for UFC 161, marking the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s inaugural event in his hometown. The atmosphere was electric, with over 15,000 fans chanting his name as he prepared for a bantamweight bout against Edwin Figueroa.

Achieving My Dream: A Personal Milestone

At the age of 28, Delorme was determined to be the first UFC fighter from Winnipeg to compete in the city. His journey to the octagon began with strong performances in “The Ultimate Fighter,” leading him to secure a contract with UFC president Dana White.

That memorable night, Delorme showcased his skills, defeating Figueroa and improving his record to 9-1. This victory was particularly sweet, as it affirmed his decision to leave his pizza business behind to pursue a career in mixed martial arts. “I wouldn’t recommend people sell everything and just hope for the best, but I would never discourage someone from chasing their dream,” said Delorme.

Financial Realities of MMA

Despite his success, Delorme faced financial challenges typical in the fight industry. For that victory, he earned $20,000, a figure that would have been halved had he lost. “Training and expenses cut deep into my earnings,” he noted. “You might see the glamour on TV, but it comes at a cost.” After a challenging streak, he was released from the UFC in January 2015.

Life After the Octagon

Following his retirement, Delorme returned to the pizza business before transitioning to the automotive sector, founding Roland Delorme Automotive Solutions. He now enjoys family life with his partner Melissa and their combined seven children. “Our home often feels like a constant birthday party,” he joked.

Delorme plans to attend the upcoming UFC Fight Night at the Canada Life Centre on April 18, 2024, although he won’t be competing. The event will feature a welterweight bout between Michael Malott and Gilbert Burns. “It will be my first UFC event with my kids and my wife, and I’m looking forward to the experience,” he said.

Advice for Aspiring Fighters

As someone who has lived the dream of competing in UFC, Delorme offers advice to aspiring fighters: “Hard work pays off, and hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” He emphasizes the importance of perseverance and dedication in achieving one’s goals.

Roland Delorme’s journey reflects the highs and lows of pursuing one’s dreams. He achieved his personal milestone, and his story continues to inspire others in the world of mixed martial arts.
