SNL: Women’s Hockey Champions Challenge Trump
During a recent episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL), Olympic gold medalists from the U.S. men’s and women’s hockey teams interrupted Connor Storrie’s monologue. The women’s team seized this opportunity to critique Donald Trump over remarks he made regarding their accomplishments.
SNL Monologue and Hockey Heroes Unite
Connor Storrie, known for his role in the hockey-centric series “Heated Rivalry,” expressed gratitude for the unique experiences his job provides. He reflected on learning to appear hockey-savvy and shared his admiration for elite players he witnessed at the Olympics.
“I am just so thankful for everything this job gives me the chance to do. Like, in two weeks I had the chance to learn how to speak Russian and look like I knew how to play hockey,” Storrie, 26, remarked during his monologue.
Women’s Hockey Team Takes a Stand
Hockey stars Quinn and Jack Hughes joined Storrie on stage. Following some lighthearted banter related to their show’s theme, the iconic women’s players, Megan Keller and Hilary Knight, made a triumphant entrance, quickly addressing their Olympic success.
- Megan Keller and Hilary Knight, members of the 2018 Olympic gold-winning team, expressed their excitement to be on the show.
- Keller and Knight’s inclusion showcased unity among hockey players, regardless of gender.
- Knight referenced Trump’s previous comments, stating, “It was going to be just us, but we thought we’d invite the guys, too.”
Trump’s Controversial Comments
During a phone call inviting the men’s team to the White House post-victory, Trump suggested they should also bring the women’s team. Knight later described this remark as “distasteful,” stating it detracted from the women’s achievements at the Olympics.
Response from the Women’s Team
In light of the comments, the U.S. women’s hockey team has opted to decline Trump’s invitation to the White House. Knight emphasized the overshadowing effect of Trump’s comments on their remarkable achievements.
“His distasteful joke was overshadowing a lot of the success, the success of just women at the Olympics carrying for Team USA,” Knight concluded in an interview with SportsCenter.
