WGA Cancels L.A. Awards Amid Staff Strike
The Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) has announced the cancellation of its 2026 Awards Ceremony in Los Angeles, citing ongoing labor strikes by its staff. WGAW president Michele Mulroney communicated this decision through a letter to participants and presenters early on Sunday.
Cancellation Details
The event, which was scheduled to take place at the JW Marriott hotel, will not proceed as planned. Mulroney stated that an alternative celebration for the Los Angeles-based nominees will be organized at a later date.
Impact of the Staff Strike
- The Writers Guild Staff Union (WGSU) has been on strike since February 17.
- Approximately 110 staff members are demanding higher wages and protections against unjust disciplinary actions.
- The strike arises from accusations against WGA management for not bargaining in good faith.
The WGSU has been active in protesting outside WGA headquarters located at Fairfax Avenue and 3rd Street. They expressed concerns over management’s attempts to use the awards show as leverage during negotiations.
New York Event Proceeds
In contrast, the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE) is set to hold its awards show in New York on March 8. This will allow for the recognition of award winners, ensuring that they still receive public acknowledgment despite the cancellation of the Los Angeles event.
Hosts and Honorees
- Atsuko Okatsuka was announced as the host for the canceled Los Angeles show.
- James Cameron was slated to receive the prestigious WGAW Laurel Award.
- Roy Wood, Jr. will host the New York ceremony at the Edison Ballroom.
- Stephen Colbert is set to be honored with the Walter Bernstein Award.
The WGAW board emphasized their respect for the staff’s right to strike and expressed disappointment at the cancellation, which impacts both the crew and nominated individuals.
