San Francisco Ballet Cancels Performances at Kennedy Center

The San Francisco Ballet has officially canceled its upcoming performances scheduled at the Kennedy Center. The shows were set to run from May 27 to May 31. A company representative confirmed this decision, expressing hope to perform in Washington, D.C. in the future.

Cancellation Details

The performances were intended to showcase “Mere Mortals,” a contemporary ballet inspired by the myth of Pandora and artificial intelligence. This production was anticipated as part of the Ballet’s 2026 touring plans, particularly significant for the company after its 2024 premiere in San Francisco.

Pressure and Controversy

The decision to withdraw follows escalating pressure on the Ballet regarding its association with the Kennedy Center. Following President Trump’s recent appointment as chairman, many voiced concerns over the institution’s increasing politicization. A Change.org petition advocating for the Ballet’s withdrawal garnered over 7,400 signatures. Supporters feared that by performing at the Kennedy Center, the Ballet would align itself with contentious political values.

Kennedy Center Closure

The situation intensified after President Trump announced plans to close the Kennedy Center for approximately two years beginning July. He referred to the shutdown as necessary for “Construction, Revitalization, and Complete Rebuilding.” This announcement has raised concerns among resident groups, including the prestigious National Symphony Orchestra, which expressed surprise at the decision.
